Scandinavian Birds by My S95

I have to admit that shooting moving subjects such as birds with a point and shoot like the Canon Powershot S95 was really an extreme task for a beginner like me. Personally, I think you will really need at least an advanced point and shoot with 10x zoom or more to get outstanding shots on birds.

Most of the time I was shooting at the end of the zoom i.e. 3.8x and it was quite hard with handheld. So, it is recommended to use continuous focusing (Servo AF) with Image Stabilization on to reduce the blur on the image. Most of the shots were taken during my visit to Skansen, Stockholm, where a lot of birds could still be sighted even in winter.

I tended to shoot in Aperture Priority Mode when capturing birds that are feeding or still, so I could control the depth of field. It's a major disadvantage of the Canon S95 with a slow f4.9 at maximum zoom of 3.8x. Bird photography is all a learning curve that takes practice and patience. I've tossed many more shots into the trash than I've kept, but that’s why we shoot digital.

Shooting from a different angle can produce great results as well. There are still a lot to learn in this area. I would love to try shooting birds in-flight next time.
