The S95 takes excellent close-up photos very easily, as the large sensor takes in a lot of light and allows the camera to focus on small subjects. It is quite a good camera for this purpose and it seems that the camera will focus at the minimum range even in Auto-Mode, provided that it finds the subject at a close distance. There's a defined Macro mode and also a Manual Focus mode (both accessible by pressing left button at the Front Ring). It's important to keep the Aperture as large as possible, preferably f2.0 or f2.8, to obtain a great Depth of Field. In terms of this, shooting in Av Mode would be handy.
Two Lover's Bug (ISO 160, Shutter 1/30s and Aperture f2.8) |
This was taken at the widest lens angle (zoomed out all the way) with the camera held very close to the two bugs. At this short distance, the focal range is very narrow. I'd judge this to be a good photo with everything in front of and behind is suitably blurry (also an interesting look into a healthy activity by a tiny subject). But, by zooming in the photo, I found that the focus on the bugs was actually out. If the subject is not in focus, the photo doesn't really connect. I also don't know what have made the edges of the leave at the upper left corner to appear watery. I also took one with the Color Assent Mode:

There is a trick for a more magnified looking picture that requires some post-processing. The high resolution sensor allows for some cropping to get a closer look. That's why it's always better to shoot at the largest resolution, even it means getting a 16GB or 32GB memory card. Here's an 900x675pixel crop of the same photo (to clear the messy leaves in front):
